The 18th batch of PGPEX VLM at IIM Calcutta, had the privilege of hosting Mr. Somnath Banerjee, a Partner at Deloitte India. In his presentation, Mr. Somnath highlighted the omnipresence of risk and stressed the importance of anticipating and mitigating risks proactively to address industry challenges effectively. He emphasized the significance of managing risks in crucial areas such as talent management, advancements in smart factories, digitization of supply chains, leveraging aftermarket services, and addressing challenges in electricity production and decarbonization. He also emphasized the role of Gen AI in effectively mitigating these risks.

Mr. Pawan, CEO and Founder of Sparrow RMS and Infinity, highlighted on process optimization & digitalization during the second session of the 'Launchpad' Leadership talk series at IIM-Calcutta. He explained that the first step towards optimization is to understand the process, beginning with the P&ID, then moving on to the Process Flow Diagram (PFD), Value Stream Mapping, and real-time data mapping. Moreover, he pointed out that the risk associated with data is determined by the complexity involved. His insights into leveraging historical data and experiences to train AI models were particularly illuminating. He stressed on the vital role of Digital Twins in transforming manufacturing processes, sharing several significant use cases. He also stressed that optimization begins with a modern technological mindset and emphasized the importance of measuring greenhouse gas emissions for sustainability in manufacturing.

His insights into the shift from mass production to mass personalization and the transformation of standard plants into automated, intelligent smart factories were incredibly valuable. Mr Prakash's emphasis on leveraging data from plants to solve manufacturing problems and addressing the issues of growing cyber theft was particularly impactful. His discussion on digital twins and their role in process validation before construction was encouraging. We also appreciated his exploration of additive manufacturing through 3D printing technologies, his comparison of the status quo with future changes, and his analysis of today's challenges versus tomorrow’s.
Furthermore, his insights into the skill gap in the manufacturing sector and how technology can help bridge this gap were very informative.

Mr.Sudhir highlighted the importance of comprehending organizational dynamics and illustrated different types of organizational cultures using the analogies of rock, pebble, and sand. He stressed the need for individuals to adapt based on their organization's culture. His insights into the significance of business acumen for visionary leadership were profound, emphasizing the necessity of financial literacy, internal functional understanding, and a solid grasp of economics and politics.
His perspectives on change management and future preparedness provided valuable guidance on the mindset a leader should adopt.

Mr.Navin AP began his session by highlighting how Bosch, a company with over 102 years of history in innovating products and solutions to enhance quality of life, started its first office in Calcutta and now has a state-of-the-art smart campus in Adugodi, Karnataka. The session delved deeper into how lean manufacturing focuses on eliminating non-value-adding operations, equipment, and resources, emphasizing the identification of waste within the value stream and its minimization through lean approaches.
Mr. Navin brought attention to the importance of getting things right the first time, especially in an era where the world is rapidly transitioning to digital. His session provided further insights into implementing lean practices in manufacturing and logistics in real-world scenarios. He emphasized to implement Lean Classic first, progress to Lean Digital and then advance to Lean 4.0.
As a cohort from the manufacturing background, the cohort found it exciting to witness the evolution of IoT in smart manufacturing.
