Programme Overview

Public policy is a critical area of contemporary engagement for aspiring leaders and managers of public and private sector firms, international and non-governmental organizations, advocacy groups, and civil society associations. The desired societal goals of equity, inclusion and justice depend on the effectiveness of public policymaking and the efficacy of governance. The formulation, design, implementation, analysis, and evaluation of public policies require trained professionals with a well-rounded understanding of the key management issues in multiple domains. Besides public officials, a grounding in public policy will be equally enabling for the professionals working in the private sector in terms of impactful decision-making, regulatory compliance, and improved corporate governance.

Public policymaking is seldom a simple technocratic exercise. The complexity of public policy making necessitates a higher degree of coordination among different stakeholders in the larger context of political management of conflicting interests and aspirational entitlements. It involves contextualized negotiations among contending interest groups. The EPPM is oriented towards imparting a holistic understanding of the political, economic and social context of public policy and everyday governance problems. Employing an interdisciplinary framework, this programme imparts a granular understanding of public policy in its varied dimensions: the local, the national and the global. It incorporates insights from the recent scholarship on street-level bureaucracy and New Public Management.
