IIM Calcutta organizes
10th Research Summer School 2025
for Faculty and Doctoral Students of Finance & Accounting
April 27 – May 6, 2025

INTRODUCTION

The Financial Research and Trading Laboratory (FRTL) of IIM Calcutta is hosting the 10th Research Summer School on Empirical Finance and Accounting Research, a prestigious 11-day program focused on advancing knowledge in empirical research methods. The program is structured as follows:

  • April 27 – May 6, 2025: A 10-day programme featuring offline sessions and online guest lectures from international scholars.
  • June 7, 2025: A 1-day online presentation for participants to share their research insights and outcomes.
Program Highlights:

During this 10-day programme, participants will engage with cutting-edge research topics drawn from top-tier journals in Accounting, Finance, and Governance. The program is designed around two core principles:

  1. talk about interesting research problems and focus on strong methodology; and
  2. replicable empirical findings.
Guidance by Eminent Faculty:

A distinguished team of faculty members will guide participants through these scholarly papers, fostering an understanding of the art of writing high-quality research papers and high-quality scholarly articles and, in the process, learn appropriate research methods.

In addition to research paper discussions, the program features specialized Econometrics tutorials. These tutorials are an integral part of the curriculum, providing participants with practical tools and techniques commonly used in research within Accounting, Finance, and Governance fields.

Structure of Research Summer School

The research summer school will comprise of five segments:

  1. Tools
    • Applied Econometrics relevant to Accounting, Finance, & Governance research
    • Art of Writing, Revising, & Publishing Papers
  2. Focus Areas
    • Finance (Corporate Finance, Market Microstructure, and Asset Pricing)
    • Accounting (Financial Reporting, Earnings Management, and Tax Research)
    • Corporate Governance (CEO Compensation, Business Groups, and Auditing)
  3. Project Work
  4. Project Presentation on Zoom
  5. Paper Writing & Submission
Project Work
  • Each participant will pursue a project in one of the three focus areas
  • Each participant will communicate in advance his/her choice of one/two focus areas, two research questions, and a one-page write-up on each of these research questions
  • By May 3, participants will choose a research question for their team project (under the guidance of their faculty mentor).
  • Teams will do the project and write a full paper
  • Within 30 days of the session completion (Saturday, June 07, 2025), teams will submit an interim draft and make an online presentation (over Zoom) to receive feedback/suggestions on their work. They will incorporate the feedback/suggestions in their paper.
  • Within 30 days of the presentation, teams will submit the first draft of a complete manuscript for review purposes.

The Research Summer School is open to:

  • Faculty Members and Doctoral Students specializing in Finance, Accounting, and Corporate Governance.
  • Motivated Candidates interested in pursuing doctoral studies or research in the future

  1. Research Interests: Mention your research interests and select one or two focus areas for the research project.
  2. CV (2-Page PDF): Submit a concise CV including:
    • Current affiliation, education, and past experience.
    • Details of scholarly papers presented at conferences (including name, venue, and year).
    • Scholarly publications and papers in the pipeline (completed but unpublished).
Application Fee:


The non-refundable fee is₹4,000 + 18% GST+applicable bank charges (if paid via Credit Card, Debit Card, or Net Banking).

Admission Process:
  1. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
  2. Selected candidates will be notified within 7 days of their application.
  3. Registration: Selected candidates must register and pay the registration fee within 7 days of selection
  4. Lodging & Boarding: Must be paid by April 7, 2025.

Accommodation Details:

Participants will stay in twin-sharing, air-conditioned double rooms on the IIM Calcutta campus (executive guest house).The accommodation includes:

  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and light refreshments.
  • Check-in: April 27, 2025, from 12:00 PM.
  • Check-out: May 6, 2025, by 8:00 PM.
Off-Campus Accommodation:

In exceptional cases, participants may opt to stay off-campus and commute to the IIM Calcutta campus daily. Those choosing this option will receive a 50% rebate on Lodging, Boarding, & Other Charges.

Fee Payment Policy:
  • All fees and charges are payable online.
  • Fees are non-refundable, except if the Research Summer School is cancelled due to unavoidable circumstances.

In the event of a pandemic or lockdown, the program may shift to a virtual mode at the discretion of FRTL. In such cases, Lodging, Boarding, & Other Charges will be waived.
