Shri Sanjoy Mukherjee
Shri Mukherjee, the former Director General and Chief of Police, West Bengal, joined Presidency College Kolkata to pursue a B.Sc. with Honours in Economics. After graduating with a First Class inEconomics Honours and following CAT in 1986, he received admission from every IIM in India and eventually joined IIM, Calcutta, for his M.B.A. He was awarded the National Talent Search Scholarship in Class X and had also qualified for admission to IIT Kharagpur.
Shri Sanjoy Mukherjee stood 5th in India in the 1989 Batch of IPS. In his first posting as SDPO, Barrackpore, he brought peace to a disturbed industrial area. At the same time, the police under him attained unprecedented popularity. Subsequently, as DC, DD Special, he planned and personally led two extended, separate operations, resulting in the capture of the infamous D-Company marksmen.
Shri Mukherjee was the last IG of the undivided South Bengal Zone, where he inculcated professional excellence coupled with strong social commitment. He then became the first Police Commissioner of Barrackpore.
For two years, as Director General of Fire, Shri Mukherjee headed the West Bengal Fire & Emergency Services Directorate. Under his leadership, the response of the Fire Brigade to different large fires had been speedy and massive, preventing fires from spreading and minimizing loss of life and property. The significant increase in transparency, speed, and quality while granting Fire NOCs during his tenure earned widespread appreciation from stakeholders.
After joining the Directorate of Security for a year, he became Chief of CID, West Bengal. Subsequently, in a unique move, he was made Principal Secretary and Head of Department, Department of Correctional Administration. He joined the West Bengal Forensic Science Laboratory in January 2020 as Administrator in the rank of Additional Director General of Police. Shri Mukherjee was promoted to Director General of Police, the highest post of an IPS Officer, in January 2022. He started DNA Fingerprinting and Serology in FSL, while Hon’ble CM inaugurated the newly constructed and functional Regional FSL at Durgapur in February 2023.
In January 2024, in an unprecedented step, Shri Mukherjee was brought back as Director General of Police, West Bengal Fire & Emergency Services. He took over the charge of Director General & Inspector General of Police in West Bengal in March 2024.
Shri Mukherjee has received several accolades for his service, including the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service. He received the highly prestigious Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Outstanding Service. Quizzing has been his passion; he has been on the quiz teams at St. Columba’s School, Presidency College, and IIM Calcutta. On Siddharth Basu’s pioneering TV programme, Quiz Time, he is the only person in India to have qualified in all 3 years.
Shri Mukherjee’s wife is an Associate Professor with a PhD in Ancient Indian History. His late father, Dr. A.P. Mukherjee IPS, had been Director General of Police of West Bengal Police, Director of CBI and Governor of Mizoram.
