With the motto of “Service to those who serve others", INitiative for Community Action, popularly known as INCA, is an IIM Calcutta student body where budding managers offer voluntarily service in the form of free management consultancy service to NGOs and others doing useful social work.
From 4 projects in its first year in 1998-99 to 18 projects in 2010-11, INCA today has become the one of the largest student bodies in IIM Calcutta with a membership of 63 students. INCA work is coordinated by Prof. Vidyanand Jha, with the assistance of 4 second year students known as INCA Organising Committee.
Currently INCA is working with 13 non-profit organisations, including CRY, Reach India, Cancer Foundation of India, Mukti Foundation, to name a few, for providing managerial inputs and models that can significantly improve the services of these organisations. Each INCA project is served by a team of 3-4 students with a faculty guide who plays the role of a mentor to the student team, helping in both the practical and theoretical aspects.
INCA projects range from developing fund raising campaign for an NGO, to the revival of a 93 year old organisation, to making a marketing strategy for an NGO’s products, to remodelling an organisation’s structure, to developing financial proposals for an organisation to pitch for funding from the govt. and many more diverse and far-reaching issues. These projects are a win-win situation for both the NGOs as well as students, for whom these projects provide an immense learning and practical exposure to real life consulting assignments during their MBA.
Besides this, INCA also organises Blood Donation camps, Joy of Giving Week, talks by eminent personalities from the social sphere, along with exhibitions and stalls of NGO products.
